AviancaTaca (AV) has firmed up an order for 33 Airbus A320neo and 18 A320 family aircraft. The order follows a previously announced memorandum of understanding at the Paris Air Show in June . It is the largest order from a single airline in the region, according to Airbus.
The new aircraft will support AV’s expansion into new markets in Latin America, while keeping the airline’s fleet among the youngest in the region.
“With this order, AviancaTaca and our subsidiaries will continue the modernization process that includes fleet renewal as its primary focus,” AV president Fabio Villegas said. “Our goal is to offer travelers the most comfortable and efficient aircraft in the market, and we are proud that the A320neo aircraft is recognized for its eco-efficiency and cutting-edge technology.”
With the order, AV has acquired 190 Airbus aircraft. The carrier has 88 A320 family aircraft and eight A330s in service.
In 2011, AV boarded 20.7 million passengers, a 17.8% increase over 2010. Domestic operations in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador resulted in a 23.4% growth in traffic, up to 11.3 million. International traffic was up 11.7%, to 9.4 million passengers.
The group is on track to join Star Alliance in April .
