Negotiations continue on fifth-freedom rights for AirBridgeCargo

German authorities denied fifth-freedom rights for Russia’s AirBridgeCargo’s (ABC) Frankfurt-on-Main to Chicago route, although the two countries will continue discussions in August.

During recent negotiations on changes to Russia-Germany bilateral agreements, industry experts said that Germany was apprehensive about letting ABC expand its business on Europe-US routes. Russia offered German cargo carriers fly rights on trans-Siberian routes but the two sides could not reach an agreement. Foreign carriers have to pay fees to several Russian airlines, mainly to Aeroflot, to operate on routes over Siberia.
ABC’s first Boeing 747-8 was delivered in January, which the carrier plans to operate on various destinations, including US routes.
Despite the stalled negotiation on the fifth-freedom rights, industry experts said the two countries did agree to discuss regulations for passenger and cargo flights separately. They also agreed to add one more city in each country for scheduled flights: Kaliningrad in Russia and Baden-Baden in Germany.
