Oman Air (WY) is in a so-called “consolidation position,” according to CEO Wayne Pearce, who joined the carrier in January.
“We have a lot of new aircraft and new routes” and “want to make the most out of it” to grow the airline, Pearce told in Berlin. Pearce said the carrier will increase frequencies from Muscat to Frankfurt to daily flights, as well as add more weekly flights to Munich.
The carrier is looking to grow its long-haul sector and its Muscat hub, which will offer new passenger services when a terminal opens in 2014 to accommodate 12 million passengers.
Six Boeing 787-8s are scheduled for delivery between 2015-2016. Pearce said the airline is considering introducing the 787 on its Europe and Asia routes from 2013. For now, he ruled out ultra long-haul flights, for example to North America, “which would be very costly,” he said.
In 2011, WY reported a 35% passenger growth. It didn’t release details on the number of passengers. In 2010, the carrier transported 3.26 million passengers, up 38% compared to 2009. Pearce is expecting similar growth numbers in 2012.
Pearce told;he is considering ways to increase WY’s cargo business. Possibilities include an ACMI-leased cargo aircraft business. On the passenger side, it is looking at codeshares.
The carrier operates four Airbus A330-200s, three A330-300s, 15 Boeing 737-700/800s, two Embraer E-175s and two ATR-42s. WY will add two additional E-175s this year. Between 2014 and 2016, up to six additional 737NGs will join the fleet.
