Air Berlin criticizes night-flight ban at Cologne/Bonn

Air Berlin (AB) CEO Hartmut Mehdorn has strongly criticized the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) state government’s decision to ban passenger flights between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. at Cologne/Bonn (CGN). He has asked German transport minister Peter Ramsauer to overrule the ban.
“This is the wrong decision, taken at the wrong time,” Mehdorn said in a statement. He pointed out that CGN is an important market for the carrier, especially for tourist destinations. The ban would affect 28 AB flights weekly in its summer schedule.
“Claiming, as the NRW cabinet decision suggests, that the level of noise caused by cargo planes is acceptable but the noise caused by passenger planes, which are quieter … shows a naive attitude to noise control,” Mehdorn said. “Making this kind of change [on] short notice damages business, costs jobs and prevents airports and airlines from planning with confidence for the future.”
