Russian investigators examining the crash of a UTair (UT) ATR 72-200 in Siberia have reversed earlier statements that icing was not considered a factor and now say they are looking into that possibility.
The aircraft crashed Monday morning shortly after takeoff from Tyumen on its way to Surgut, killing 31 of the 43 people aboard.
According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said Wednesday, “At this moment, the most likely cause for the crash is the fact that the aircraft was not treated with de-icer before flight.”
UTair’s CEO Andrei Martirosov told RIA Novosti Wednesday that all UTair aircraft would undergo "mandatory" de-icing before flight. Previously, the decision on whether or not to de-ice the aircraft had been left to the captain, according to the news agency.
UT has grounded its -200s until the end of the investigation, but is operating its ATR 72-500s.
