Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) is adding Bangkok to city destinations of its new medium- and long-haul budget carrier.
The announcement raised eyebrows because the Singapore (SIN)-Bangkok (BKK) route is already one of the busiest in Asia, with Scoot’s entry adding competition between different lines within the SIA family. SIA flies SIN to BKK, as does Tiger Airways in which SIA has a 32.84% stake.
“We have included Bangkok in Scoot’s network because we know that there’s a demand and our guests have told us loud and clear that they want us to!” Scoot CEO Campbell Wilson told.
“Introducing Bangkok to our network benefits not just our guests in Singapore, but also those in Australia and China, who can now connect through Singapore to Bangkok,” Wilson added.
The move also maximizes the utilization of Scoot’s aircraft, he said.
Scoot will launch services June 4 with an inaugural flight from Singapore to Sydney, followed by SIN-Gold Coast service June 12.
“Our first-year routes will link Australia, Singapore and China. Our guests’ support will allow us to add more destinations – some new for a low cost carrier and some old favorites,” said Wilson.
