Rolls-Royce has completed the first test run of its upgraded Trent 1000 Package C variant, the company announced Tuesday.
The engine—which will be the powerplant for the Boeing 787-9 scheduled to enter service in 2014 for launch customer Air New Zealand (ANZ)—is also destined for 787-8s from later that year. ANZ’s powerplant will produce 74,000 lbs. of thrust.
Testing on Package C will continue on a test bed at Rolls’ Derby plant in the UK until mid-June, with two engines being built for air testing on the company’s 747-200 test aircraft. Flight tests on the engine, which will have a new advanced turbine case cooling system to improve efficiency, will start in the summer and run for three months.
Rolls will begin supplying a production version of Package C engines to Boeing from 2013 to support its 787-9 test program.
Package C engines will deliver a 1% fuel burn improvement over their Package B predecessors.
