SunExpress to lease 737-800 fleet

SunExpress (XQ), the Antalya-based joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, will lease its fleet of 28 Boeing 737-800s to make better use of over-capacity during the low-demand European winter season, it said in an statement. Several aircraft could be wet- or dry-leased for traffic outside Europe, especially to the Southern Hemisphere, to cover the carrier’s strong seasonal difference. The fleet has a high utilization rate in the European summer months. The carrier plans to add several more 737-800s this year.
XQ will operate 1,000 weekly flights between Europe and Turkey in the summer season. Its subsidiary, SunExpress Germany, will operate service between Germany and Egypt, as well as an intensive domestic network inside Turkey. XQ transported 7.7 million passengers last year, up 15.8% over 2010. Turnover increased 30.3% to 666 million.
