UTair (UT) has grounded all its ATR 72-200s following the crash of a UTair aircraft Monday morning shortly after taking off from Tyumen in Siberia on its way to Surgut, killing 31. The aircraft was carrying 39 passengers and four crew members.
UTair CEO Andrey Martirosov said in a statement the company was confident of the technical condition of the aircraft, but that all three -200s will be grounded pending the outcome of the investigation. The carrier plans to replace the grounded aircraft with -500s. According to UT’s website, it has three -200s and 15 -500s.
The Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC), which is responsible for airline incidents investigations in Russia and several CIS republics, reported Tuesday that after taking off the aircraft rose to an altitude of 210 meters then banked to the right 35 degrees, then to the left more than 50 degrees. The aircraft’s engines were working until the moment of the crash.
The Federal Air Transport Agency Rosaviatsia head Aleksandr Neradko told journalists Monday that the aircraft wasn’t de-iced but that authorities did not believe that icing was a factor.
