Estonian Air to add 12 Embraer aircraft to its fleet

Estonian Air (OV) will lease four Embraer E-170s from Finnair and is in talks with the manufacturer and leasing companies over the delivery schedule and conditions for eight more aircraft, a mix of E-175s and E-190s, which are scheduled to enter the fleet in 2013-2015.

The first four 76-seat E-170s, which will be delivered this month, will replace its existing Boeing aircraft as the carrier expands. “Embraer E-jet family offers a range of sizes, which allow us to also offer aircraft similar size to existing smaller Boeing aircraft but at the same time keep single fleet type efficiency and regional aircraft operating cost levels,” said OV president Tero Taskila.
Taskila said that having a smaller and larger version of the same type of aircraft “means significant economic efficiency for Estonian Air. We can change the aircraft size based on demand on routes, thus reducing the need to change the amount of flight frequencies based on seasonality.”
The Tallinn-based carrier flies to 25 destinations in the CIS, Scandinavia and Europe. OV’s fleet comprises one Boeing 737-300 and three Bombardier CRJ900s, according to its website. Its subsidiary, Estonian Air Regional, has two SAAB 340s.
OV carried 678,049 passengers last year, up 16.4 % compared to 2010.
Last year OV said the state will invest €30 million ($38.3 million) in the carrier to renew its fleet and increase flight frequencies and destinations.
