Russian airlines carried 64.1 million passengers in 2011, a 12.6% increase over 2010. International passengers rose 13.2% to 31.4 million; domestic passengers increased 12% to 32.7 million.
Aeroflot (SU) carried the most passengers, at 14.2 million, up 25.6%. Transaero Airlines (SU) carried 8.5 million passengers, up 27.2% year-over-year . UTair (UT) reported 5.8 million passengers carried, up 31.3% . S7 Group, which includes Sibir (S7) and Globus (GH), carried 6.6 million passengers in 2011, up 11.4% . St. Petersburg-based Rossiya Airlines (FV), which will soon be part of SU group, carried 3.5 million passengers. The overall share of the market’s five biggest airlines increased from 53.1% to 57.9%.
Despite stable growth and positive passenger numbers in the Russian market, experts say the overall airline economy in Russia deteriorated in 2011. Load factor decreased one point to 77.2%. Load factor on international routes fell 0.7 point to 81.1%.
The number of Russian carriers decreased from nearly 160 to 126. In 2011, Russian aviation authorities withdrew 37 air operators’ certificates, including Avianova and Sky Express.
