Boeing will handicap itself on potential sales of the 737 MAX if it sticks with a sole-source engine on the aircraft, Air Lease Corp. chairman and CEO Steven Udvar-Hazy said Tuesday.
“Boeing having a sole engine source will be handicapped. The potential MAX marketplace could be broadened because there is a large band of users who could accept that aircraft if they had an engine choice,” Udvar-Hazy said while speaking on a panel at the ISTAT Americas 2012 conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Boeing launched the MAX, a re-engined 737 to rival the Airbus A320neo, with the CFM International CFM LEAP-1B.
Udvar-Hazy said he was not prejudiced against aircraft that have only one engine choice. “I’ve bought over 500 737s,” he said.
