Merpati chief replaced; pilots threaten strike

Indonesia's State-Owned Enterprises Ministry has replaced Merpati Nusantara Airlines (MZ) president director Jhony Sardjono Tjitrokusumo, citing his inability to improve the company’s performance, according to the Jakarta Postnewspaper.
In addition, the newspaper reports a number of senior employees of the ailing state-owned airline have also resigned.
Rudy Setyopurnomo has been named as acting president director.
The ministry’s deputy for logistics and infrastructure Sumaryanto Widayatin told the newspaper the airline has suffered losses up to IDR251 billion ($27.3 million) since January.
The ministry’s decision to fire Sardjono has evoked strong protests from the airline’s pilots, who have threatened to strike Monday.
In February, MZ signed a memorandum of understanding for 40 Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) ARJ21-700s, a 100-seat regional aircraft.
