Monarch Airlines to establish bmibaby base

UK scheduled leisure airline Monarch Airlines (ZB) will set up a base at the East Midlands Airport (EMA), hub of struggling low-cost carrier bmibaby, which new owner International Airlines Group has said it may close if no buyer is found by Sept. 10.
A ZB spokeswoman said Friday the airline was still deliberating on the type and number of aircraft to be based at EMA, which will serve Mediterranean holiday destinations, including Malaga, Alicante and Palma (Spain), as well as Faro (Portugal).
The EMA base will be operational by late summer; details on aircraft and flight frequencies will be announced in the next two weeks, she said.
ZB also plans to increase frequencies at Birmingham Airport (BHX) to Malaga, Alicante, Palma and Rome, as well as introducing a new service to Barcelona.
In a thinly veiled reference to bmibaby’s closure, ZB MD Kevin George said: “In light of recent industry changes, opportunities have opened up in the market. It has become clear that the Midlands will be underserved as a region in the future.”
