US House passes FAA funding extension

The US House of Representatives passed an extension of FAA funding through Feb. 17, by which date House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman John Mica (R-Fla.) and other lawmakers believe a full, three- or four-year reauthorization bill can be cleared by Congress.
The Senate is expected to pass the temporary extension to Feb. 17 before the current extension, the agency's 22nd since its authorization lapsed Sept. 30, 2007, expires Jan. 31. Lawmakers are confident about reaching accord on a long-term bill because Senate Democrats and House Republicans last week reached a compromise on airline unionization voting rules.
But a number of issues still need to be negotiated, ranging from Washington National (DCA) slot allocations to whether subsidies for flights to rural communities should be cut. The extension passed by the House Tuesday is a so-called "clean" bill, containing no extraneous policy provisions.
