Kuwait strikes affecting airport and airline operations

Strikes in Kuwait have continued to a fifth day grounding many of national carrier Kuwait Airways flights and leading to chaos in the airport as customs officers also stay away.
Sources on the ground say there appears to be no sign of a let off.   The  airport customs officials, among the nearly 3,000 on strike all over the country, started their action on Thursday while Kuwait Airways Corporation (KAC) employees joined them on Saturday.

Nearly a dozen flights were cancelled on the first day and nine more on Sunday as all the customs and KAC employees maintained that their demands have not been met since September and October of last year, when similar strikes broke out.

The workers are demanding an increase in salaries and benefits in accordance with previous agreements given by government which now claims it is under strain and cannot afford the demands.

Other airport workers are also expected to join the walkouts.
