The Luxembourg District Court on Tuesday acquitted three former directors of Luxair of all charges in the fatal crash of flight 9642 on Nov. 6, 2002, in which 20 passengers and crew died.
The Fokker 50 crashed and burned on final approach from to Luxembourg Findel airport about 6 nautical miles (11 km.) short of the runway while trying to land in fog. Only two people survived the accident: the pilot and a French passenger.
Three former directors of the airline, Roger Sietzen, Jean-Donat Calmes and Christian Heinzmann, were acquitted. The pilot received a suspended sentence of three-and-a-half years in prison and a fine of €4,000 ($5,338). The former director of Luxair’s technical department received a suspended sentence of 18 months in prison and a €2,000 fine, while the two mechanics in charge of the aircraft were sentenced each to two years suspended imprisonment and a €2,500 fine.
All defendants were charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and involuntary breaches of regulations on civil aviation.
