Budapest Airport (BUD) is taking urgent action to address the resulting shortfall in revenue following the collapse of Hungarian state-owned Malev Hungarian Airlines (MA) earlier this year.
BUD said it will close Terminal 1 (T1) for passenger operations temporarily and move all passenger operations to Terminal 2 (T2). The move will move take place during the night of May 29-30, after which all easyJet, Germanwings, Jet2.com, Norwegian and Wizz Air passengers will depart from T2B. Flights arriving from Schengen countries will be processed through Terminal 2A and those from non-Schengen countries at Terminal 2B.
Only BUD’s offices will remain in T1, with limited access, and the surrounding parking lot will be closed. General aviation and cargo operations close to T1 are unaffected.
In a statement, BUD said the loss of traffic after the MA collapse, combined with additional tax burdens, left “no other choice but to reduce operational costs by combining operational areas” and optimize use of the more modern T2.
Negotiations are underway with the Hungarian state railway company and the Budapest Transport Center to provide connections between the railway station, which is located at T1, and T2.
