Russia’s Transaero Airline (UN) has received permission to operate scheduled flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg (LED) to Rome (FCO) and Milan (MXP), becoming the second Russian carrier, after Aeroflot (SU), on these routes.
According to the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency Rosaviatsia, UN was approved for seven weekly frequencies from Moscow to each of these Italian cities, though the carrier asked for 14 weekly frequencies. The airline will fly from LED to MXP and FCO three times a week, though it asked for daily flights. UN representatives gave no timetable for the launch, pending confirmation from the regulator.
In February, Russian and Italian aviation authorities amended the bilateral agreement adding one more designated carrier from each country on the Moscow-FCO and Moscow-MXP routes. Until the beginning of the year, only two carriers—Russia’s SU and Italy’s Alitalia (AZ)—could fly between these destinations. According to industry experts, nearly 10 Russian airlines applied for the rights for these destinations.
Last year, UN tried to launch charter flights from Moscow to FCO and MXP during the New Year holidays but the regulator withdrew permission. Last month, the Russian Commission of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) said Rosaviatsia violated competition law.
